Abortion Pill Reversal

Since 2016, the PC Ministry has been part of Heartbeat International's Abortion Pill Reversal Network.

What is APR? The standard FDA-approved medication abortion, marketed under the brand name Mifeprex, is a three-step process which is now approved for use up to 10 weeks after the last menstrual period.

The first step takes place in the abortion provider’s office, where the woman takes mifepristone, a drug that causes the death of the embryo. This medication may cause nausea, vomiting, spotting, and cramping for the pregnant woman.

Next, she goes home with instructions to take the second medication, misoprostol, within 2-4 days after taking mifepristone. Misoprostol causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy. Misoprostol may cause serious side effects as well, including extreme cramping and bleeding that can last anywhere from 9 days to 6 weeks.

For step three, after approximately 2 weeks, the woman returns to the abortion provider’s office to find out if the pregnancy has indeed successfully aborted.

Although this medication has been heralded as a safe, effective, convenient, and private way to have an abortion, it may feel anything but safe and convenient to the pregnant mom a few days into the process. During the interim between the first medication and the second one, many women begin to feel especially apprehensive and uncertain about what they have decided to do, and they wonder if there could possibly be a way out.

In some cases, our medical team can help these women.

Some History: In 2009, Dr. George Delgado received a call from a woman who had taken the first dose of medication in the standard abortion pill procedure, and was second-guessing her decision. Dr. Delgado, a pro-life OB/GYN at Culture of Life Family Services in San Diego, California, had many years of experience handling threatened miscarriage by administering progesterone, a hormone naturally produced in pregnant women to sustain a healthy pregnancy. Progesterone therapy had been safely used in pregnancy for nearly 60 years already, and there were no serious known side effects for mother or baby. Perhaps a regimen of progesterone therapy would be helpful in this circumstance as well?

Dr. Delgado offered to give her progesterone therapy in an attempt to counteract the effects of the medication she had already taken. His hunch paid off. Approximately 8 months later, she gratefully gave birth to a healthy child.

Even as Dr. Delgado and his colleagues rejoiced at this outcome, they knew that there must be other women having this same experience. The second thoughts, the nagging doubts, the sickening regrets. . . How many other women out there were feeling this way as they moved forward through the multiple steps of the abortion pill process?

Out of their compassion and concern for hurting women, the Abortion Pill Reversal (APR) became an official service offered in a limited number of clinics across the nation. The Abortion Pill Reversal Network has since found a home at Heartbeat International, and is now know as Abortion Pill Rescue.

The Ministry's medical team joined the APR Provider Network in 2016. Women hoping to reverse their abortions contact the APR hotline - which refers them to us.

Time is critical, and our APR medical and counseling team quickly mobilizes to meet with the woman, ensure that the pregnancy is still viable, and begin treatment.
