New Thoughts on Abortion Pill Reversal

By Shellie Wilson, Nurse Manager

In 2015, Dr. George Delgado started offering Abortion Pill Reversal through his Culture of Life Family Services clinic in San Diego. Soon after, the Pregnancy Clinic joined the newly-formed Abortion Pill Reversal (APR) Provider Network. The APR Provider Network is now called Abortion Pill Rescue and is administered by Heartbeat International, one of the Pregnancy Clinic’s national affiliations)(1).

You can read more about the APR process and our involvement here.

This September, the Pregnancy Clinic staff attended the CareNet conference and I was able to meet Dr. George Delagado, who with Dr. Matt Harrison, has spearheaded the Abortion Pill Reversal Protocol.  I heard Dr. Delgado speak about the advances with the Abortion Pill Recovery protocol (APR), which is meeting the needs of patients who have taken the first medication (whether it is Mifepristone, Methotrexate, and/or Mifepristone with Misoprostol) of the Abortion Pill or Medication Abortion process (2, 3).

I was pleased to tell Dr. Delgado that the Pregnancy Clinic has three patients currently being treated through the APR process, one of whom is due soon with her baby boy. This particular woman had been given Methotrexate, a cancer drug that attacks rapidly dividing cells found in growing cancer tumors - and in human embryos. She came to our clinic to "reverse" the effects of the Methotrexate and started taking oral Progesterone, Leucovorin, and extra Folic Acid.

We also have another patient who is expecting her son in January 2020. She had taken both Mifipristone and Misoprostol. Our medical director prescribed oral Progesterone to sustain her pregnancy.

We are also looking forward to a third current APR patient giving birth in May 2020.

We always do intense follow-up with calls/texts/emails to our APR patients who need consistent emotional support.  As you can imagine, there is a rollercoaster of emotions and thoughts as someone chooses Abortion Pill Reversal.

One day this month we had three calls for APR services. Only 2 of the patients were able to come into the Pregnancy Clinic that day. The first APR patient was very motivated to take the Progesterone but unfortunately miscarried a few days later. Much emotional/spiritual support was needed to help her process the grief of making an abortion decision, changing her mind, moving forward in hopes of reversing the Abortion Pill process, then miscarrying after her efforts to rescue her pregnancy by taking oral Progesterone.

The second APR patient that day was very undecided about moving forward with APR and taking oral Progesterone but did start the Progesterone. The next day she decided to stop taking the Progesterone and was not able to be contacted so we do not know the outcome in her case.  Many times there is much pressure to continue the Medication Abortion by taking the second set of pills by the father of the baby, parents of the APR patient, or even the abortion clinic who started the Medication Abortion.

Please pray for more trained counselors and medical sonographers/nurses to participate in this lifesaving service of Abortion Pill Reversal.
